This is from the State Competition at Ashland University in May of 2025.

Power of the Pen is a creative writing competition for 7th and 8th grade students across Ohio. Tournaments are held at the district, regional, and state level. Edison students have a strong tradition of performing well, with many students advancing to the state competition. Participants compete both individually and as part of a team. In 2025, our 7th grade team earned first place at the regional tournament.
During each round of competition, students are given a writing prompt and have 40 minutes to craft a creative story. Points are awarded by judges, and students place both as individuals and as a team. In our practices, we will work to develop creative writing skills as well as improve writing mechanics. Students share their stories, and through peer feedback and discussion, a lot of writing growth occurs.

Practice Schedule

Practices will be held Tuesdays after school. If we have snow days, practice will be rescheduled for Thursday of that week.

Power of the Pen competition dates are as follows:

  • January 17, 2026 - Just Write Competition held at Cloverleaf
  • January 31, 2026 - District Competition, Power of the Pen held at Roxboro Middle School, Cleveland Heights
  • March 7, 2026 - Regional Competition, Power of the Pen held at St. Charles Borromeo Parish School, Parma
  • May 17-18, 2026 - State Competition, Power of the Pen held at Ashland University
